The President of Ghana has suspended the Chief Justice in an unprecedented move.

Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has suspended the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Gertrude Torkornoo — a historic first for the country.
An investigation is now underway after three secret petitions were submitted, asking for her permanent removal. These petitions accuse her of wrongdoing, though the details haven’t been made public yet.
In Ghana, the Chief Justice has job security and can only be removed for serious reasons like incompetence or misconduct.
Justice Torkornoo hasn’t responded to the suspension so far. However, Ghana’s former Attorney General says the move is an attempt to weaken the independence of the judiciary.
This is a complete charade,” Godfred Yeboah Dame told the BBC.
“It’s the biggest attack on Ghana’s judiciary in history—the worst threat to its independence since the start of our current constitution.”
Gertrude Torkornoo is Ghana’s third female Chief Justice. She was appointed in 2023 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo and is in charge of making sure justice is properly carried out in the country.
Earlier this year, Ms. Torkornoo faced a request to remove her from office. But at the time, former President Akufo-Addo rejected it, saying the petition had “many problems,” according to Reuters.
When the latest three petitions were filed, Ms. Torkornoo wasn’t given copies at first. Some lawyers said this was unfair and went against her right to a fair hearing. Eventually, the petitions were shared with her, and she was allowed to respond to the accusations privately and in writing.
Now, she’ll be invited to appear before a five-member committee to respond again. The committee will then decide whether or not she should be removed from office.
